Danish Film & Media Composers
Danish Film & Media Composers, DFMC, is an association for members of The Danish Society for Jazz, Rock and Folk Composers, The Danish Composers’ Union, Danish Popular Authors and the music publishers.

The work of the DFMC is funded by KODA, a non-profit collective rights management society that administers Danish and international copyrights for music creators and publishers, when their music is performed in public.
From only about ten members at the start four years ago we are now 50. All are composers writing music for film and for the media.

In 2010 we will focus our attention on:

The Nordic Film Music Award
In December 2008 The Nordic Film Music Award was presented by the DFMC for the first time. The award, which was initiated on a modest scale by the association in 2008, has gained in importance. It is now awarded – in cooperation with the Nordic Film Composers’ Network, NFCN – as part of the prestigious Dragon Awards presented at the Göteborg International Film Festival, GIFF, the biggest of its kind in Scandinavia.
With this the DFMC has taken one step further towards attaining one of its main goals:

  • to increase the focus on film and other cultural manifestations in the Nordic countries and on film music as an art form.

The presentation of the awards for 2011 will take part as a joint venture with all the countries involved and with DFMC at the helm. Contact Halfdan E or Karsten Fundal.

Negotiations for an agreement
Through its membership of the Danish Film Workers’ Union, the DFMC aims at getting the work of the film composer secured by a group contract. This will be a first in Denmark. Until now it has been the responsibility of the individual composer to negotiate a reasonable fee for his services.
With this the DFMC is breaking new grounds. To have film music recognized on equal terms with other aspects of film production will benefit all composers regardless of genre, style and media. Contact Jørgen Lauritsen.

Seminar on film music
To heighten the awareness of film music and to further the communication among the creative forces involved in making a film, the DFMC together with The National Film School of Denmark are planning an extensive seminar in the spring of 2011. Contact Frans Bak.

Activities for members
The nature of the film composer’s work often makes it a solitary one. To make up for this the DFMC invites its members to take part in various arrangements offering a chance to discuss diverse topics related to the job. Meetings normally take place every two months. Contact Niklas Schak or Michael Blicher.

Nordic Film Composers’ Network
DFMC board members Karsten Fundal and Martin Fabricius are also active within the Nordic Film Composers’ Network and the European network FFACE. Futhermore Karsten Fundal is newly appointed Vice President of the FFACE.

DFMC welcomes questions and ideas. The members of the board and the secretary can be reached at:
